Welcome
In 2001, CYO Athletics began the CYO Officials Academy to help introduce officiating to young people and any individual interested in enforcing the rules of the game. The role of officiating is indicative of enhancing the quality of each child’s sport’s experience.

Basic to the program is the belief that properly and adequately trained from the beginning, individuals with an interest in officiating can develop as capable officials. It is a goal of the program that officials will learn the professional way to perform the duties of an official.

CYO recruits by sport, veteran officials from the high school and college level to assist as mentors and trainers for each student member. They guide, educate, supervise, critique, and assist the young official in order that the young official can develop and progress toward a meaningful avocation as an official.

Baseball/Softball
Training is held in June. Baseball games begin the second week in July. Softball games begin the third week of July. Both seasons last about a month.

Flag Football
Training is held the last week of August. Games are played on Saturdays only. The season begins second week of September and lasts through mid-October.

Soccer
Trainings are held the last two weeks of August. The season begins the first week in September. Boys’ games are played on Saturdays and Sundays. Girls’ games are played during the week and weekends. Locations vary throughout Summit County.

Basketball
Trainings are held on Sunday evenings. There are six mandatory sessions in order to complete the training. They will begin the third week of October and last through the third week of November. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays. Locations vary throughout Summit County.

Track & Field
Training is held in early March. The season begins in April and runs through mid-May. Most meets are scheduled on Sundays.

Volleyball
Trainings are held in early March and will be completed by the third week of March. Games begin the first week of April. The season will be completed by mid-May. Games are played on weeknights and weekends.

After training sessions are completed, CYO assigns officials based on the game and the individual’s schedule. The official is paid a fee by game by sport. Officials will be evaluated at the end of their sport’s season. After an official gains experience, they are elevated to the next level of officiating.

Official Code of Ethics
Parishes have entrusted us to assist them in the educational development of their youth through athletics. The proper operation of such a process requires that officials be independent, impartial and responsible to people they serve. In recognition of these expectations there is hereby established a Code of Ethics for all officials. The purpose of the Code is to establish guidelines for ethical standards of conduct for all officials.

  • Officials shall master both the rules of the game and the mechanics necessary to enforce rules, and shall exercise authority in an impartial, firm and controlled manner.

  • Officials shall work with each other and their local and state associations in a positive and cooperative manner.

  • Officials shall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession in all interaction with student-athletes, coaches, league directors, administrators, colleagues and the public.

  • Officials shall prepare themselves both physically and mentally, shall dress neatly and appropriately, and shall conduct themselves in a manner consistent with high standards of the profession.

  • Officials shall be punctual and professional in their obligations.

  • Officials shall remain conscious that their conduct influences the respect of student-athletes, coaches and the public hold for the profession.

  • Officials shall, while enforcing the rules of play, remain aware of the inherent risk of injury that competition poses to student-athletes. Where appropriate, they shall inform event management of conditions or situations that appear unreasonably hazardous.

  • Officials shall take reasonable steps to educate themselves in recognition of emergency conditions that might arise during competition.
